An electronic ranging system for monitoring the position of the drawbar shaft


The built-in electronic Ranging system (DMS) records the exact position of the drawbar shaft, which in turn records the current position of the tool - ensuring safe clamping and release for both the machine and the operator.


The DMS is included in a release device that combines analog sensor electronics with a limit switch. It also features a compact design that includes an induction sensor and a target ring located on the drawbar shaft.


The release unit contains a cylindrical inductive analog sensor. The sensor is based on the linear variable differential transformer principle (LVDT). It consists of two coils in series, which are different phases, and is used to detect the position of the drawbar shaft. Evaluation electronics installed in the release unit determine distance changes and calculate the output signal. If the target ring moves axially, the coupling coefficient between the coils changes and three clamping states are identified:

The signals sent to the machine control system can be analog (4-20 mA or 2-10 V) or digital (S1, S2, S3) and can be sent during rotation or when the system is idle.
