What is a gear pump? How does the gear pump work?

2023-09-21 09:37:45

Gear pumpIt is one of the most popular pumps in the positive displacement pump category. In a gear pump, a certain amount of liquid is sealed by meshing gears, and the liquid is transported when the gear rotates to make it move. Johannes Kepler invented the gear pump around 1600.

Hydraulic gear pumps transmit pulseless flow proportional to gear speed. These pumps are mainly used to produce high pressure. Typically, these are used to pump high viscosity liquids such as adhesives, liquid fuels, motor oils and hydrocarbons.

Gear pump has a fixed displacement; Therefore, these are called positive displacement pumps.

A positive displacement pump means that the pump delivers a uniform flow rate at a uniform speed, independent of pressure changes. A fixed displacement means that the pump delivers a constant amount of liquid with each shaft rotation.

Gear pumps usually have two gears. One gear is called the idler or driven gear, and the second gear is called the power gear or drive gear.

The power gear is connected with the prime mover or mechanical power source. Internal combustion engines, electric motors, or manual labor are used to rotate power or drive gears. The gear is also called the main gear, and the idler is also called the driven gear.

Gear pump work

Gear pumps use the motion of rotating gears to move liquid. The working principle of the gear pump is positive displacement. It works as follows:

1. In the start-up phase, when energy is supplied to the drive shaft, the gear pump starts to work, and then the drive or power gear starts to rotate using the power of the prime mover.

2. The driven gear or idler (engaged with the power or drive gear) also rotates with the rotation of the power gear, but it rotates in the opposite direction. When these two gears begin to rotate, the suction side of the pump begins to create a partial vacuum.

3. When a vacuum is generated, the suction side fluid is sucked into the gear.

4. After this treatment, the inhaled fluid is blocked between the housing and the gear.

5. The blocking fluid between the gear teeth and the housing then moves with the rotation of the gear teeth, and the fluid flows from the inlet side to the outlet side.

6. Similarly, in the driven gear, the fluid also flows from the inlet side to the outlet side, and the high-pressure fluid is also discharged from the outlet side of the pump.

7. Because the drive gear and driven gear of the gear pump are fully engaged, there is no space for fluid movement. Therefore, the fluid cannot flow directly to the exit side or from the entrance side to the exit side. For the flow of fluid in the pump, the movement of these gears is very mandatory, and without their movement, the fluid cannot flow.
