This will cause damage to the impeller and may cause the shaft to bounce off the impeller and break. If the pump is made of stainless steel, it is unlikely that holes or convex deformations will form in the rear shell. What can happen is that the impeller bushing gets stuck in the shaft. The time it takes for a pump to turn dry and fail depends on many variables.

The aperture of the impeller is also a factor. The greater the clearance between the impeller hole and the shaft, the longer the time before it is damaged.
