A centrifugal pump mainly consists of an outer pump casing or casing, an impeller, a mechanical seal, a pump shaft and bearings, and a motor. The pump casing is the main fixed part of the pump and serves two main functions:
• Converts the velocity head from the impeller to pressure head and directs the flow to the discharge connection.
• Acts as a pressure boundary for pumped fluids.
The impeller is the rotating part of a pump, usually made of iron, steel, aluminum, or plastic, that transfers energy from the motor driving the pump to the fluid being pumped by forcing the fluid outward from the center of rotation. Impeller designs are classified as radial, mixed flow or axial flow based on their hydraulic geometry. The pump is equipped with some kind of sealing device to ensure proper sealing in the area where the pump shaft enters the pump casing.
Liquid enters the pump at the suction flange. At this point, the liquid velocity is essentially the same as the velocity in the pipe leading to the pump. The liquid flows into the eyes of the impeller. The impeller blades collect liquid at the impeller eye. The impeller blades accelerate and spread the flow, increasing speed and creating pressure. The liquid velocity at the impeller outlet is greater than the liquid velocity at the impeller inlet.
The casing directs the liquid to the discharge neck, where the casing cutwater separates the flow and leads to the discharge port of the pump. At this point, some velocity energy is converted into pressure energy by slowing the liquid from the casing velocity to the discharge tube velocity.
Types of centrifugal pumps:
• End-suction pumps are pumps that have axial suction and discharge at 90 degrees from suction. ANSI (ASME) or ISO centrifugal pumps.
• Centrifugal water pump is a type of industrial water pump used to transport dirty water such as drinking water, cooling water, hot water and sewage.
• Heat transfer pumps deliver hot or cold fluids for heating or cooling purposes. Heat transfer fluid pumps circulate thermal oil and are typically used at temperatures up to 300°C since the vapor pressure is only a few bars.
• Hygienic centrifugal pump maintains product purity without risk of contamination. This type of pump is easy to clean, has a smooth interior that prevents bacterial growth, and does not create any impurities in the process.
