9 methods for daily performance testing of sherwin penetrants

2023-09-21 11:30:01

Daily inspection of penetrant systems is necessary and required by major industry codes to ensure the continued performance and integrity of penetrant materials and systems. Routine inspections can verify the performance of a penetration inspection system in just a few minutes. Inspections can identify system components that may need to be adjusted to ensure continued compliance and prevent costly delays, such as reprocessing parts.

1. Infiltration pollution

Check the penetrant material for contamination, such as deposits, waxy deposits, or discoloration. Contaminated penetrants should be discarded and replaced or corrected to an acceptable condition before use.

2. Dry development conditions

Check the recovered or reused developer for fluorescence or clumping. The dry developer should be fluffy. Caked developer should not be used and should be replaced. Dry developers that show 10 or more fluorescent spots in a 10 cm diameter circle should be replaced. Understand the properties available to developers and the relationship between dwell time and inspection quality.

3. Water developer contamination

Check for fluorescence and uniform coverage of water-soluble and water-suspended developers. Developers that display fluorescence or uneven coverage should be replaced.

4. Penetration system performance

The known defect criteria are processed through the LPI system and the results are compared with the known defect criteria treated with unused materials. If the results of the penetrant material in use do not match those of the material not in use, further testing may be completed before discarding or correcting the penetrant material in use. In the past year, properly displaying system performance checks was the second largest Nadcap audit result for penetration systems. Find out here what you need to do to comply.

5. Black light intensity

Check the intensity of the black light daily, and check the first time you use the black light. From the front of the filter to the sensor surface 15 inches /38.1 cm, the minimum acceptable strength is 1000 microwatts/cm2. UV LED lights shall comply with ASTM E3022. Most UV-A lamps on the market are set to provide 5,000 µW/cm2 at a distance of 15 inches /38 cm. To understand the numbers, read more here.

6. Special ultraviolet lighting

Check UV intensity before using UV tubes, light guides and light pens. The minimum acceptable UV intensity at the working distance is 1000 microwatts/cm2.

7. Cleanliness of the examination room

Check check area for fluorescent contamination and visible light levels. If there is excessive fluorescent contamination, clean the inspection area to prevent contamination of the inspected part. The ambient visible light within the inspection area should not exceed 2 feet of candlelight on the inspection surface.

8. Check water pressure and temperature

Check that the water pressure and temperature are set correctly. Water pressure and temperature Settings should be adjusted as necessary before the penetration inspection.

9. Check the barometer

Check the barometer used in the LPI system at the beginning of each work shift. These quick checks should be performed daily or at the beginning of each work shift to verify acceptable results to ensure the ongoing integrity of the LPI system.
