How to choose the best screw pump? KNOLL screw pump

2023-09-22 17:13:48

Screw pumps are effective for certain applications and fluids. However, they are not suitable for all applications, which is generally true for most different types of pumps. The right choice of pump is always crucial. You must find, configure and operate the right pump system to produce the best results for your specific fluid handling application.

How the screw pump works:

It helps to understand the basic working principle of the screw pump (PC). The inner rotor is usually made of a solid piece of metal in the shape of a single helix rotating in a double helical cavity. The rotation creates suction, effectively pulling the process fluid through the pump.

Screw pumps are typically used in applications where fluid viscosity levels are beyond the effective handling range of standard centrifugal pumps. PC pumps may also be effective when the process fluid is abrasive or shear-sensitive. A good example might include food production, such as solid fruits suspended in liquids that you don't want to be cut as they go through the pump.

Screw pump selection:

• Fluid characteristics

• Pump size

• Operating speed

• Pump stator/rotor material

• Pressure: flow ratio

Know your fluids:

Before deciding whether a screw pump is the right choice, understanding your fluid is key. The physical properties of the fluid will then help you determine the size, operating speed, and material of the pump. The main fluid factors to focus on are temperature, viscosity, and grinding quality.

The higher the viscosity, the lower the pump speed should be. As a result, abrasive fluids often require larger screw pumps that can operate at lower speeds. Smaller and faster PC pumps can be less efficient, and wear of abrasive fluids can cause costly problems over time.

In addition, temperature affects the performance and durability of the stator elastomer. As the fluid temperature increases, the elastomer stator expands. Therefore, the stator material must match the fluid temperature to produce the desired pumping effect.

Pressure and flow:

In general, screw pumps are an effective solution when the required pressure is higher than the flow rate (PSI > GPM). Operators often avoid PC pumps because they are typically most efficient at lower speeds - using a slower pump may seem counterintuitive. However, viscous, abrasive and temperature-sensitive materials can cause problems with other pumps that may provide higher flow rates and speeds. Like the tortoise and the hare, sometimes slow and steady is what's really needed to win the race!
